I S L A N D I  is concerned with the relationship between societal systems and the individual. The systems with which we interact every day are, in one sense, comforting. It's nice to know that your bus will come every morning, and that the money you put in the bank last week will still be there next week. In another sense, however, these systems are crushing and dehumanizing. Individuals are increasingly known by numbers assigned to them by such systems, and even traded as commodities among advertisers. Perhaps most disquieting of all, certain of these systems (especially economic and financial systems) are so large and complex that they exceed the understanding of any one person – the system runs itself, and its consequences are meted out dispassionately and without any recourse.

I S L A N D I explores these relationships, and wonders how – or if – an individual might wish to assert their individuality within such societal rigidity.

violin, Sini Virtanen

As I was composing this piece, I felt it was about yearning: for explanations, for expressivity, for regions of the instrument left unexplored. I chose the title not only for its meaning (“thirst” in French) but also its sound, whose envelope is analogous to that of many events in the work, large and small.

Sinawi
PAN Project
piri, gamin
janggu, Woonjung Sim

Sinawi, an improvisational ensemble much like jazz derived from shaman music and reflects the spontaneity of the musicians. Within fixed melodic modes and rhythmic patterns, this music demonstrates a soulful and high artistic caliber in both rhythm and melody. The music and the instrumental sonorities represent the constituent elements of the shaman ritual. Through the musical expression there are progressive stages such as an invitation to the deity, the spiritual amalgam between the deity and people, and the return to daily life.

Behavior Modeling Therapy

Jaewon Shin

viola, Sebastian Stefanovic

The concept of Behavior Modeling appeared in American psychologist Albert Bandura's Social Learning Theory (1977). He explained the process of 'learning' step by step,

1)Attention process

2) Retention process

3) Reproduction process

4) Motivation process

It was argued that behavior is learned socially. However, this piece expresses this process as sound by transforming it into a way in which one person, one instrument, motivates and receives itself rather than several interactions between other persons or instruments.

  1. Gathered together: solo piri. Gong from afar spreads. The haunted people gather and a party begins. 모여들다: 적막이 감도는 피리 독주. 징의 소리는 서서히 더 먼 곳까지 퍼진다. 무언가에 홀린 듯 하나 둘 모여들기 시작하고, 한 무리의 난장이 시작된다.

  2. Excited and confused: dancing, hoping, screaming, crouching… partying to death

  3. Without dying: getting tired, emptiness/depression takes over. People stop talking to each other. Babbling fills the space. 죽지도 못하고는: 사람들은 지쳐 주저않았고, 풀리지 못한 허망함이 사함들이 덮친다. 다들 혼잣말에 잠기고, 엉켜버린 수많은 독백이 공간을 채운다.

  4. A man is not a man:  Dance to exhaustion though no energy left. Everyone dances till passing out.

It is said that in the year of the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, people sang “Deungdeunggok,” and walked around pretending to be goblins and shamans, laughing and crying. Even now, about 500 years later, many people struggle to live while feeling helpless in many problems that cannot be changed by individual power alone. As a young man living in this chaotic world, I dedicate a “new Deungdeunggok”.  Gathered together - Excited and confused - Without dying - A man is not a man.

Another Wave

Jacob Sudol https://jacobsudol.com

voice, Jamie Jordan

piano, Eunmi Ko

I composed “Another Wave” for my friends of the Astralis Duo, pianist Katalin Lukács and soprano Stephanie Aston, as part of their Rising Water Project. My wife, Chen-Hui Jen, wrote the text for the song. As a sort of poetic setting the harmonic materials, lines, and phrases ebb and flow over each other as do waves of water do upon each other.

Text by Chen-Hui Jen

Another wave,

Here comes another wave

Onto our land.

Here comes

Another wave from a distant rain

That never drained.

We are here,

Where all the trees of the world are like brothers and sisters

Ancient pines, vines, grass, and moss,

We are all as one -

Everglades.

Here comes

Another wave from recent rain

Washing, swelling

Onto our land.

Ancient ice, tides, mountains, and oceans,

We will be as one

When all the cities are becoming crumbs, sand -

Falling into haze,

Fading into waves.

We are drifting towards a time

When no trees, no cities remain -

Another wave from imminent rain.

We will return as one

Surging into haze,

Ceasing into waves

Onto eternal land

That has no man.
