In Motion is an interactive installation that utilizes machine learning and computer vision to track the physical coordinates of visitors to the gallery. This data impacts sound, video, and images in real-time creating a unique co-authored work of art with every participant’s experience. In Motion is a collaborative, interdisciplinary work with participating artists and engineers from the fields of Computer Science, Dance, Electrical Engineering, Electric-Time Based Art, Mathematics & Statistics, and Music. In Motion has been funded in part through the generous support of the BGR Entertainment Challenge and Fusion Studio for Entertainment and Engineering and is in partnership with the Department of Theatre and Dance, Purdue Polytechnic Institute’s School of Engineering Technology, Fusion Studio for Entertainment and Engineering, and the Machine Learning in Motion VIP course.

Shiny Object Syndrome

Mathew Rosenblum https://www.mathewrosenblum.com

percussion, Kevin von Kampen

Mathew Rosenblum masterfully takes the listener on a journey exploring all the possible timbres a single amplified cymbal can create. The performer navigates through the piece using a variety of playing implements including brushes, a bow, fishing line, wooden sticks and more. Over the course of the piece, the sounds Rosenblum achieves naturally flow from one sound to the next creating a beautiful experience for the listener. This composition is one of five pieces that are a part of my project entitled Amplified Perception. – Al Cerulo *this program note is written by percussionist Al Cerulo

Oshi Dhora is an intercultural musical meditation on the process of death, releasing worldly regrets, crossing into the spirit world and finding peace. The text, constructed by vocalist Saeyeon Jeong (with borrowings from Korean ritual and pansori texts), is rooted in Korean exorcism ritual that blends shaman Jindo Ssitgim and Buddhist Jesokcheon. The opening of the text calls on the spirit of the deceased (오시더라/He came) to relieve lingering regrets unresolved in the world, after which Namuyeo (Buddhist Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva) is evoked to facilitate the passage onto paradise and spiritual peace (배띄워라 배띄워라 극락가자 배놓아라/Let’s float our boats, let's go to paradise). This music ebbs, flows and mixes between music traditions: sections of driving trance-like rhythms from Korean shaman ritual music trade off with the slow, meditative phrasing of Chinese guqin music, all infused with chromaticism and abstract sound texture from Western free improvisation.

Stay

Daroo Lee https://www.instagram.com/daroolee/

Stay is a piece about a man who longs to escape his current situation and move towards a better future. However, the weight of his burdens weighs him down, preventing him from taking the necessary steps towards his destination. Despite his repeated failures and setbacks, he never gives up, pushing forward with an unwavering determination to reach the light.

Gorgon’s head

Kari Besharse https://karibesharse.net

voice, Jamie Jordan

Gorgon’s head (Gorgonocephalus caputmedusae) is a species of echinoderms found in the cold, deep waters of the northern hemisphere off the coasts of Scotland, the Orkneys, Shetlands, Ireland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. These underwater creatures are beautiful and mysteries in their structure, form and ways. Members of the echinoderm family, they are characterized by tube feet, a calcite body covering and a five-part symmetrical body. The five arms are repeatedly branched, creating coils and spirals of hundreds of branches and branchlets. Genus Gorgonocephalus is often referred to as basket stars, for the way they extend their arms creating a basket to better capture small crustaceans that come within reach.

salsa al vapor

Felipe Tovar-Haneo https://felipe-tovar-henao.com

piano, Eunmi Ko

salsa al vapor is an homage to and celebration of the late Mexican composer Javier Álvarez (1956-2023), whose eclectic and idiosyncratic music had a transformative impact on my own.

Largely inspired by his 1990’s electroacoustic miniature Mambo à la Braque, where Álvarez uses samples from Pérez Prado’s mambo, Caballo negro to create a cubist-like sound collage, salsa al vapor takes the recording of Colombian salsa hit song, El Preso by Fruko y sus Tesos, to generate highly rhythmic passages for both the electronic and instrumental parts. This is interwoven with more meditative and sparse material that takes inspiration from the album Mirror Guide (2021) by vaporwave artist Giant Claw. The coexistence between these two highly contrasting soundworlds is meant to allude to the vast and diverse range of influences that Álvarez had throughout his life.

REDLINE

Kyle Grimm https://www.kylegrimmcomposer.com

saxophone, Katherine Weintraub

REDLINE, for alto saxophone and live electronics, blends the styles of contemporary classical, bebop jazz, noise, and modern pop production into a high-energy exploration of melody and polyphony. Inspired by the virtuosity of Joshua Redman, and employing electronic techniques such as granular synthesis and auto-tune, REDLINE was written to appease the many different interests and obsessions of the composer.

Consort Yu

Yao Hsiao

In the piece Consort Yu, I was inspired by the traditional Chinese Peking Opera The Hegemon-King Bids His Lady Farewell, which is about the fight between two kings, Xiang Yu and Liu Bang. In the opera, Xiang Yu is surrounded by Liu Bang's forces and on the verge of total defeat. Realizing the dire situation that has befallen them, Xiang Yu’s wife, Consort Yu, begs to die alongside her husband, but he strongly refuses her wish. Afterwards, as he is distracted, Yu commits suicide with Xiang Yu's own sword.

I tried to create connections between traditional Peking opera and contemporary electronic music. First, I used timbres and rhythms similar to those used by The Hegemon-King Bids His Lady Farewell. Also, the musical use of unstable pulses, such as tempo rubato and voice glissando in Peking opera, can relate to the color of contemporary music. Second, I used traditional Peking opera singing style throughout the vocal part. I also used some similar lines from the Peking opera but changed some notes to add different harmonic colors. In electronics, I sometimes imitated the rhythms of the Peking opera, and at other times made different granulated layers of various singing styles in Peking opera. Moreover, I used Leap Motion to better control the gestures of Peking opera in a live performance setting.

Text:

My lord is now sleeping quietly. I can go out of the tent for a walk to let go of my sorrow.

看⼤王和衣睡穩,我出帳外且散愁情。

Oh, hold on! Why is there the singing of the state of Chu in the enemy's village? What is the reason for this? Oh, my lord, my lord! I'm afraid that my lord is on the verge of total defeat!

哎呀且住!

怎麼敵⼈寨內竟有楚國歌聲,這是甚麼緣故? 哎呀⼤王啊⼤王! 只恐⼤勢去矣!

Oh, my lord, my lord! So be it! I would like to use the sword of my lord to kill myself, so as not to become your burden!

⼤王啊!⼤王啊!也罷!願以⼤王腰間寶劍,⾃刎君前,免得掛念妾⾝哪!

Han soldiers have captured my territory, Besieged on all sides singing. The king's spirit is exhausted, How can I survive!

漢兵已略地,四⾯楚歌聲。

君王意⽓盡,妾妃何聊⽣!
